  • India to be in talks with Taliban in Russia at ‘non-official’ level
    India said it will participate, at a “non-official level”, in the meeting being hosted by Russia on Afghanistan where representatives of the Taliban will be present. In response to queries regarding India’s participation in the meeting, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, “We are aware that the Russian Federation is hosting a meeting in Moscow on 9 November on Afghanistan.” “Our participation at the meeting will be at the non-official level,” he said.   • Taliban Deputy Is Released Amid Push for Afghan Peace Talks: KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — A longtime deputy in the Taliban who was arrested in a joint intelligence raid by American and Pakistani agents eight years ago has been freed, the insurgent group confirmed on Thursday.
    The release of the deputy, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, who is in Pakistan, appeared to be the most tangible result of talks held recently by the Taliban and American diplomats. Mullah Baradar, who seemed interested in exploring peace negotiations before his capture in January 2010, was the Taliban’s most senior military leader at the time. ( New York Times. 25.10.2018)

  • Election Rally Bombing in Afghanistan Heightens Security Fears
    A suicide bomber attacked an election rally on Tuesday in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, killing at least 14 people and once again highlighting security concerns as candidates prepare for an Oct. 20 parliamentary vote amid a raging war.The attack struck at a gathering of about 300 supporters of the candidate Nasir Mohmand in Nangarhar’s Kama district. Najibullah Kamawal, the province’s director of public health, said at least 43 others were wounded. Officials feared the toll could rise. (2.10.2018. New York Times)
