  • China is becoming a global leader in innovation, which can be demonstrated by its achievements in the areas of ultra-high voltage transmission, high-speed rail and nuclear power, reported. (People’s Daily, May 04, 2018)
  • The world’s longest sea bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, will be open for vehicular traffic shortly. The Hong Kong Link Road (HKLR) which connects main bridge with the Hong Kong SAR Boundary Crossing Facilities, is under its final installation, testing its traffic management and monitoring systems.   • Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended informal meetings in China on April 28 with a promise to reduce border tensions after a high-altitude standoff in the Himalayas last year. The leaders spent two days in the central Chinese city of Wuhan for discussions on how to mend ties strained when troops from both sides came eyeball-to-eyeball in the disputed Doklam area.   • President Xi Jinping sought to open a “new chapter” in relations between China and India as he hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 27 for a summit aimed at mending ties strained by a border dispute. New Delhi has also raised concerns about Beijing's Belt and Road initiative, a global trade infrastructure programme that includes a major project through Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the disputed territory that New Delhi claims is illegally occupied. President Xi Jinping delivered a speech at a grand gathering marking of 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx on May 4 in Beijing.

  • Modi will visit China this week as rapprochement gathers pace. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China on April 27-28 announced by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two countries have no choice other than pursuing everlasting friendship, mutually beneficial cooperation and common development, Wang told reporters after meeting Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj in Beijing.   • President Xi Jinping called on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization members on April 23 to remain true to their original aspiration and push cooperation in all areas. (China Daily, April 24, 2018)
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping said that he is looking forward to meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in June and jointly planning China-Russia ties in a new era. President Putin will attend Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the eastern Chinese coastal city of Qingdao in June 2018.(Xinhua, April 24, 2018)
  • Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Syrian Issue, Xie Xiaoyan, emphasized on Sunday that all parties concerned should “speak with facts” about the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria. (People's Daily, April 23, 2018)
  • Let the world see how China has developed: Xi China should promote its own development while continuing with and expanding its opening-up policy. The country should encourage the international community to jointly shoulder the duties that arise through economic globalization and work together to tackle the challenges that develop, Xi said.(China Daily, April 25, 2018)
  • China published a report on U.S. human rights in response to the Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2017 issued by the U.S. State Department on April 20. The report, titled "Human Rights Record of the United States in 2017," said the United States posed once again as "the guardian of human rights" and a self-styled "human rights judge" while its own human rights record remained tarnished and showed continued deterioration.   • Chinese President Xi Jinping called for efforts to fully implement a holistic approach to national security and break new ground in national security in the new era. The CNS Liaoning aircraft carrier and a new-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine participate in the sea parade. (Xinhua, April 18, 2018)
  • China refuted a U.S. research report on Belt and Road Initiative by reiterating that the initiative aims to achieve win-win economic cooperation. According to the Associated Press, after analyzing 15 Chinese-funded port projects, a research institute called C4ADS concluded that the projects were not driven by win-win economic development, but intended to expand China's "political influence and military presence. "China has no geopolitical calculations, seeks no exclusionary blocs and imposes no business deals on others," China responded. (Xinhua, April 19, 2018)
  • China urged US to treat Chinese companies lawfully, fairly. The statement is in response to a US ban on leading Chinese smartphone maker ZTE. (Xinhua, April 17, 2018)
  • China and Russia are developing their own precision air strike capabilities as the US, UK and France attacked Syria over the weekend, military experts said on Monday. "Precision strike capacity is a key of modern war, Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times on Monday. "It controls the scale of battles and avoids secondary victimization." (Global Times, April 17, 2018)
  • China is closing the gap on US in technology IP race China’s rising investment in research and expansion of its higher education system mean that it is fast closing the gap with the United States in intellectual property and the struggle to be the No.1 global technology power, according to patent experts. (Dawn News, April 16, 2018)
  • President Xi stressed on domestic innovation in core technology, “core technology depends on one's own efforts”, he said. In a panel discussion with deputies from Guangdong Province at this year's National People's Congress, President Xi Jinping said that human capital is China's primary resource and the development of innovation is its driving force. Since 2012, President Xi has highlighted the importance of scientific innovation and mastering core technology. His message has been that there are hidden risks that come with core technologies not being mastered domestically. (People’s Daily, April 19, 2018)

  • China stands ready to fight for its interests and the future of globalization. The looming trade war between America and China, the world’s two largest economies, is the front-line of the battle between an emerging China-led order of multilateralism and free trade, and US unilateralism and protectionism. It is a battle between “bridges and walls,” and China is ready to fight till the bitter end.
