  • Washington provokes Beijing in the South China Sea at its own peril. Two US Navy warships—the USS Higgins, a destroyer, and the USS Antietam, a cruiser—trespassed into China’s territorial waters off the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, provoking Beijing in the South China Sea.   • China expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to a U.S. State Department report on Hong Kong affairs.   • China should still be considered as a developing country despite its impressive poverty reduction efforts over the past decades, an Ethiopian expert said on May 21. In an interview with Xinhua, Gedion Jalata, CEO of the Center for Excellence International Consult, an Ethiopian Consulting firm, said that claims made by some Western officials and experts that China should be considered as a developed nation are wrong.
  • The World Bank has classified China as a developing country in terms of its per capita nominal GDP, although China has become the world's second largest economy, said Jalata. A 2016 World Bank report shows that China's per capita income was far below developed nations like the United States, Britain, Germany and Japan.(Xinhua, May 22, 2018)

  • Xi met Merkel, called for higher-level China-Germany ties. Xi welcomed Merkel on her 11th visit to China, hailing the great importance she has attached to bilateral ties. Since the two countries launched an all-dimensional strategic partnership in 2014, bilateral ties have improved significantly with the cooperation width and depth reaching an unprecedented level, said Xi.(Xinhua, May 25, 2018)
  • The Confucius Institutes are bridge between China and the world. Prior to the end of 2017, China had built 525 Confucius Institutes and 1113 Confucius Classrooms in 146 countries and regions, which have played an important role in strengthening cooperation in education and cultural communication between China and other countries, meanwhile improving mutual understanding and friendship.   • The Chinese Foreign Minister blasted the U.S. for excluding China from a multinational military exercise to be held in June, noting that the decision was “imprudent and unconstructive.”

  • Military exercises, a clear warning against 'Taiwan independence' The recent military exercises performed by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) serve as a clear warning to "Taiwan independence" separatists, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said. Two Su-35 fighter jets and a H-6K bomber fly in formation on May 11, 2018. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) air force conducted patrol training over China's island of Taiwan. (Xinhua, May 17, 2018)
  • Xi demands high-level research institutions for strong military. He made these remarks during an inspection of the People's Liberation Army Academy of Military Science on May 16, 2018. Noting that military science was an important force in guiding military practices and spearheading transformations, Xi said research should be combat-oriented, meet the needs of the armed forces and be forward-thinking.   • China, Japan and South Korea injected fresh confidence into global growth by reaffirming their commitment to economic globalization as well as trade and investment liberalization. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in made the pledge at a trilateral meeting in Tokyo on May 9, 2018, giving a big boost for free trade against a rising undercurrent of protectionism in the world.
