  • President Maithripala Sirisena affirmed on implementing death penalty: Stressed ‘nobody should try to reverse the decision’. Also explained the reasons to the UN Secretary General for implementing, as his intention is to save the nation and future generations. Opposition, however, is of the view that matter should be resolved by the courts. Mahinda Rajapaksa disclosed that I also confronted with the same proposal in my tenure but categorically declined it as its court purview. (The Kathmandu Post, June 29, 2019)
  • Colombo in the grip Communal Tensions: Since the Easter Sunday Bombing in April 2019, Muslim community (which constitutes 10 percent of the total population) in Sri Lanka is continuously under threat by hostile attitude of hardline Buddhists in the country. Christian’s community that makes up 6 percent of the total population of Sri Lanka, victimization and attacks on this minority sect apparently by the local monks (may not be actual member of Buddhist Clergy) are widespread. Increased spate of violence, if left untreated, may drag the country into minority rights crisis, which is grave and alarming. (Daily News, Colombo, Aljazeera, June 24, 2019)
