President Message

Ambassador Jauhar Saleem
President
Institute of Regional Studies

South Asia is home to a quarter of the entire humanity, while its adjacent regions house another quarter of the global population. Yet, the level of connectivity and cooperation that has catapulted many other parts of the world to high quality industrial and human development has been mostly missing in the region. Building understanding through addressing mistrust and misperceptions – and spreading knowledge and promoting dialogue – could pave the way for an enabling environment, where any disputes would be resolved through peaceful means, and mutual respect and trust would replace hegemonic ambitions and promote fruitful cooperation to the common benefit of the peoples of the region.
Since its inception in 1982, as an autonomous think tank, IRS’ slogan is “know thy neighbor.” It has accordingly provided quality in-depth research and objective analysis of political, economic and social issues and events in the region.
While over the years the role of IRS in promoting understanding, dialogue and research – through its archives, events and publications – has been widely acknowledged, in these challenging times where think-tanks are gaining yet greater significance, it is imperative that IRS should adopt a more proactive, inclusive and progressive approach.
As President IRS, one of my top priorities will be to provide insightful and cogent policy inputs to relevant stakeholders on key issues. While focusing on micro and macro geo-political and geo-economic challenges facing the region, IRS will lend enhanced attention to human development, demography, culture, maritime affairs, cyber security and climate change. The focus will be on making IRS publications more impactful, enhancing scholars research programs and invigorating non-resident fellowships. There will also be a greater emphasis on forging national and international linkages and collaboration in terms of organizing intellectual gatherings, and conducting and promoting research.
IRS will also enhance its interaction with academia, industry and media. The scope of initiatives to engage the youth in discussions as well as research programs will be widened, and research methodology courses will be conducted to facilitate young researchers. A vibrant internship program is being expanded upon. And the institute is in the process of digitalizing its archives and expanding the library facilities.
I look forward to working with the able and ambitious IRS team, which is also being strengthened with the induction of top-notch researchers to befittingly carry forward the IRS mission. I am confident that together we will build on the intellectual prowess and prestige of this glorious institution, and make it ever more relevant for the thinkers and policymakers alike.
